The Relational Aesthetic as Gamut.

What is public without private? Up without down? Safety without danger? Without one you can’t have the other and it is between these tensions that discourse and conversation thrive.

This relationship has taken many meanings in visual art with theories of the relational aesthetic – the ‘ironic‘ dual nature of modernism – some saying it is a comment on the human condition.

BUT IT IS EVERYWHERE!

Maurizio Cattelan’s ‘Untitled’ – juxtaposes the small, totally unsuitable size with the fact that what you’re seeing is an everyday working lift. YEAH!…

An area in creative thought called ‘relationism‘ has highlighted the development of the complex created when two ideas are placed into a situation together. This is the process of illumination that is created from individual conception to a contextual narrative.

Chuck Close’s self portrait - a photo realistic painting combined with an abstract application.

And hitherto-moreover-thus we have one of the great mysteries of modern creative thought! The twofold nature of abstract/narrative, sculpture/painting, metaphoric/metonymic, thought/process. Each of these viewpoints fortify the other, absorbing the other’s dynamism to reach an area where the full scope of possibilities and options are available.

Subodh Gupta’s 'Line of Control' - establishes a narrative created from the overall production to the small household objects used to create the sculpture.

There is a gamut created by the relationship. A sphere where both ideas sit and affect each other, they inform each other and compliment each other’s abilities until the meaning is created. When one of the opposites is in control, the other silently develops its opinion in the background. But prepare to be surprised every time this exchange happens.
